German Environment Agency awarded EEX with the contract of the German auction platform as of 2024

Date 28.11.2022

The European Energy Exchange AG (EEX) in Leipzig has been awarded the contract for the next German auction platform in the fourth trading period on 23/11/2022 following a procurement process launched by the German Environment Agency (UBA) in August. Thus, EEX will continue to run the German auctions of general allowances (EUA) and aviation allowances (EUAA) in the European Emissions Trading System (EU ETS 1). EEX had already been awarded the contract for the current German platform in early 2018. This mandate will expire in January 2024 and is now renewed for three years with the option of an extension for a further two years until January 2029. Before auctions can start under the new mandate the platform has to undergo a formal assessment process of the European Commission and needs to be included in the Annex of the EU Auctioning Regulation.
