The European Energy Exchange (EEX), in coordination with the German Emissions Trading Authority (DEHSt), the European Commission and the EU Member States, published the updated auction calendar 2024 as well as the auction calendar 2025 for the German auctions of emission allowances ().
Updated calendar 2024 for EUA auctions
The 2024 auction calendar has been adjusted in accordance with the EU Auctioning Regulation. The auction volumes will thus be reduced by the Market Stability Reserve (MSR) for the period from September to December 2024 in accordance with the total number of allowances in circulation 2023 (TNAC) published by the EU Commission in June. The auction volume reduction for Germany in this period amounts to about 22,028,000 EUAs. The German EUA auctions will continue on Fridays from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. With the exception of the revised auction volumes, all other auction details remain unchanged.
The revised auction volumes from September to December 2024 are as follows:
EUA Auctions from September 2024 | Volume |
---|---|
Volume per auction September to December | 1,886,500 EUA |
Volume last auction | 1,890,500 EUA |
2025 calendar for EUA auctions
The German auctions of EUA will also take place on Fridays from 9:00 am to 11:00 am between 10/01/2025 and 12/12/2025.
EUA Auctions 2025 | Volume |
---|---|
Total volume | 96,764,500 EUA |
Volumen per auction January to July | 1,607,000 EUA |
Volume last auction August | 1,614,500 EUA |
Volume per auction September to December | 3,129,500 EUA |
Volume last auction | 3,127,000 EUA |
Since the beginning of 2019, the MSR is in effect which leads to reduced auction volumes. The 2025 EUA auction volume is hence reduced by the MSR scheme until August 2025. The volumes from September to December 2025 are preliminary and may be subject to MSR-related adjustments. The determination of the MSR reduction for the auction quantities from September 2025 to August 2026 is expected in June 2025. The preliminary total auction volume for 2025 is 96,764,500 EUA.
From 2025 onwards, aviation allowances (EUAA) will no longer be auctioned on the primary market. The corresponding volumes will be auctioned proportionally as EUA spot contracts in the weekly auctions. This is in line with the requirements of the new EU Auctioning Regulation.
