German Emissions Trading Authority (DEHSt): reports, research and international activities (03)
Dear Readers,
After nearly two years of legislative process, the EU approved a series of important climate laws under the umbrella of the European Green Deal in the first half of 2023: Member states and the European Parliament gave the final green light for the reform of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), the establishment of a Social Climate Fund worth more than 80 billion euros, a new Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), a separate emissions trading scheme for transport and buildings (ETS 2) and new rules for emissions trading in aviation and shipping.
Hence, the EU has now set the formal steps for measures that the EU member states need to pursue to meet their binding climate goals: EU CO2 emissions must fall by at least 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990. By 2050, Europe has to become greenhouse gas neutral.
The German Environment Agency (UBA) is currently strongly involved with the preparation and implementation of many of these ambitious climate and energy-reforms related to emissions trading. At the same time, we are in the process of updating our website with the reforms and, of course, will also provide you with interesting subject-specific publications. We look forward to your visit to our website and hope you enjoy reading our newsletter.
Yours faithfully,
Dr Jürgen Landgrebe
Head of the German Emissions Trading Authority at the German Environment Agency
