German Emissions Trading Authority (DEHSt): international newsletter – reports, research and activities (01)
Dear Sir or Madam,
2022 will be another important year where policy makers in Germany, Europe and around the world will take decisions paving the way towards climate neutrality by mid-century. The new German government which took office on December 8th has agreed an ambitious transformation agenda aiming to achieve 80 percent renewable electricity generation by 2030. A rising carbon price combined with effective social compensation is also part of the coalition agreement.
At the European level, the EU Commission has launched two ambitious legislative packages striving to make EU climate and energy policy “fit for achieving 55 percent” emission reductions by 2030. The fundamental reform proposed for the EU ETS ranges from adjusting the cap, including the maritime sector, introducing a new carbon border adjustment mechanism to establishing a new upstream emissions trading system for buildings and road transport. New and expanded European and national funds are needed to enable an economically balanced and socially acceptable transformation of our economy.
I wish you a pleasant read and a healthy and successful New Year!
Yours faithfully,
Dr Jürgen Landgrebe
Head of the German Emissions Trading Authority at the German Environment Agency
